In 1994, devotees Deanna and Fields Burke returned from building a retreat for two Tibetan monks in the North East. Not long after, Fields' parents, Joe and Barbara Burke graciously donated a large part of their residence to be renovated for a Chapel. Brother Dharmananda, an SRF monastic, gave his blessings and construction began for the Chapel which is the current location of the Fort Lauderdale Meditation Group. Today we are a happy family of over 50 devotees.
Thank you for your interest in the Fort Lauderdale Meditation Group which is composed of members and friends of Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), a nonprofit religious organization headquartered in Los Angeles, California with meditation centers around the world. SRF was founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda for the purpose of disseminating Kriya Yoga, a definite scientific technique for attaining direct personal experience of God. Through its worldwide service and teachings, SRF seeks to awaken greater understanding of the harmony underlying all true religions, and a fuller expression in the world of the love that unites all people when they realize their oneness in God.
Those who wish to learn about the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda are encouraged to read his Autobiography of a Yogi. This book, now considered a spiritual classic, has been published in numerous languages and has become an authoritative reference on yoga, used in many universities and colleges.
Specific instruction on meditation and living a spiritual life is presented in the SRF Lessons, a home-study course ideal for any sincere truth-seeker.

When Brother Mokshananda, an SRF monastic visited South Florida, he asked if there was an SRF presence in the area. There being none, he asked if any of the devotees were willing to start a group. Two of the most spirited devotees of Paramahansa Yogananda, Anne Zoellner, Barbara Broadhurst and others volunteered to accept the challenge. Motivated by Master's saying, "Where there is sincerity and devotion, things always happen by grace," the group was formed in 1976.
The first location chosen was a community room in the Atlantic Bank [now Bank Atlantic near McNab and Federal Highway]. Throughout the years, the group also met at different devotee's homes; at the South East Bank where a relationship with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio was formed; and several other locations including the Galt Ocean Mile area in Fort Lauderdale. We have been at our current permanent location since 1994
When you visit the Chapel, feel free to browse our Book Room where you can find free literature and a collection of books, tapes and other items for sale, including the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda. The Book Room is open after the Sunday morning services.
